Star Wars Darth Bane: Path of Destruction by Drew Karpyshyn

Summary:

Since childhood, Dessel has known only the abuse of his hateful father and the dangerous, soul-crushing labor of a cortosis miner. Deep in the tunnels of the desolate planet Apatros, endlessly excavating the rare mineral valued throughout the galaxy, Dessel dreams of the day he can escape—a day he fears may never come. But when a high-stakes card game ends in deadly violence, Dessel suddenly finds himself a wanted man.

On the run from vengeful Republic forces, Dessel vanishes into the ranks of the Sith army, and ships out to join the bloody war against the Republic and its Jedi champions. There, Dessel’s brutality, cunning, and exceptional command of the Force swiftly win him renown as a warrior. But in the eyes of his watchful masters, he is destined for a far greater role in the ultimate Sith plan for the galaxy—if he can prove himself truly worthy.

As an acolyte in the Sith academy, studying the secrets and skills of the dark side at the feet of its greatest masters, Dessel embraces his new Sith identity: Bane. However the true test is yet to come. In order to gain acceptance into the Brotherhood of Darkness one must fully surrender to the dark side through a trial by fire that Bane, for all his unquenchable fury and lust for power, may not be strong enough to endure . . . especially since deception, treachery, and murder run rampant among the Sith disciples, and utter ruthlessness alone is the key to survival. Only by defying the most sacred traditions, rejecting all he has been taught, and drawing upon the long-forgotten wisdom of the very first Sith can Bane hope to triumph–and forge from the ashes of that which he must destroy a new era of absolute dark power.

The Review:

I picked up this book on a whim, mainly because I always wanted to read more of the Star Wars Expanded Universe, especially from the Old Republic because it always fascinated me especially within the Star Wars lore.

This book sort of gives the origin story of Darth Bane, who started off as a miner named Dressel from one of the Outer Rim planets in which he works long hours and has to pay off a debt to gangsters. As he becomes a wanted man from the Republic and sneaks aboard a Sith ship and joins the Sith army and starts to become force sensitive.

What I like about the book, is that it really taps into the Dark side of the force and how the Sith operates.

Peace is a lie, there is only passion.
Through passion, I gain strength.
Through strength, I gain power.
Through power, I gain victory.
Through victory, my chains are broken.
The Force shall free me

Seeing a lot of how the Sith operates really makes them more complex. From their point of they see that the Jedi are evil, and it could be true from a certain point of view. You also see how the Sith Academy at Korriban operates. They believe in competition among their students and Bane has to sort of outwit and outmatch all of the other students in order to rise through the ranks.

A lot of his strength comes with his anger at the past. He was basically abused for most of his life and that’s where the strength of his power comes from. His anger basically becomes a gift through the dark side. As he rises through the ranks he wants to know more about the Sith, and the history how it ties in with Darth Revan.

Darth Bane is also an extremely complex character. His story arc and why he turns to the dark side makes sense. His turn was brought on my at first a need for survival and then for a lust for power, and he even turns on the Sith lords in order to get his goal.

As he is in the Sith Academy he deals with a lot of betrayal, and his relationship with Githany, a former Jedi who turns to the Dark Side. Her character was also very complex and really give how both sides of the war.

As this was written by Drew Karpyshan, he was the senior writer for Knight of the Old Republic and it really shows. There was a lot of references to the game and with it being one of my favorite Star Wars games that showed a lot of complexities with the force and how it is not always black and white.

In the end, Path of Destruction was a great introduction to the story of Darth Bane. It was dark, twisted and I loved everything about it. If you are a fan of Star Wars, I would highly recommend that you pick it up.

Top 5 Wednesday: Other SFF Media Part 2

Happy Wednesday everyone, and here is another Top 5 Wednesday and the topic is:

August 15: Freebie
–In celebration of my birthday week (and because there are 5 Wednesdays this month), this is my gift to you. Pick any topic you want this week! We have years worth of archived topics you can look through if you are having trouble deciding.

Top 5 Wednesday is a group in Goodreads and was formerly created by Lainey at gingerreadslainey and is now done by Sam from Thoughts on Tomes. It is open to everyone.

For the Freebie I wanted to do another Top 5 SFF Medias which are non book related. As a SFF I had a bunch and I would love to talk more about them.

Click here for my other Top 5 Wednesday.

Bioshock series

Image result for bioshock series

This is a game series that takes us from the deep seas of Rapture to the city up above in Columbia. Its a first person shooter that has such an engaging world and rich storytelling. The first Bioshock had such an awesome twist and with Bioshock Infinite, Booker and Elizabeth are some of my favorite characters in gaming.

Saga

Image result for saga

Calling it a Romeo and Juliet set in space is pretty much an understatement. It deals with the marriage and relationship of two different species who are on opposite ends of a war being on the run, while caring for a newborn child. Also there is a bounty hunter who is after them who I believe is such a fantastic character.

The X Files

Image result for the x files

I got into this series kinda of late but I have been watching it on Hulu. I would consider this a sort of precursor to shows like Supernatural and Buffy. Dealing with a monster of the week, while also dealing with long story arc. It deals with Mulder and Scully and they are tasked with dealing with sort of the strange cases that may deal with aliens. Even though I started late I do really love the show.

The Fallout series

Image result for the fallout series

An open world game set within a post apocalyptic wasteland. This game series is amazing. Even with this vast wasteland it is filled with engaging quests, developed characters and a great use of setting. I also love the morality system that was presented in Fallout 3 with a decision to save a town or blow it up.

Star Wars: Knight of the Old Republic

Image result for star wars knights of the old republic

Even though this is based on an existing property such as Star Wars, I would call it the definitive RPG experience within the Star Wars universe. It is also the game that put Bioware, the makers of Dragon Age and Mass Effect on the map. It has such engaging characters that you follow including a homicidal droid. Part of me really wishes that we could get another Star Wars RPG experience but I don’t think that will happen.

Those are some other SFF medias that I like. Do you have any favorite SFF media? Let me know in the comments below.

Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor

Summary:

The dream chooses the dreamer, not the other way around—and Lazlo Strange, war orphan and junior librarian, has always feared that his dream chose poorly. Since he was five years old he’s been obsessed with the mythic lost city of Weep, but it would take someone bolder than he to cross half the world in search of it. Then a stunning opportunity presents itself, in the person of a hero called the Godslayer and a band of legendary warriors, and he has to seize his chance or lose his dream forever.

What happened in Weep two hundred years ago to cut it off from the rest of the world? What exactly did the Godslayer slay that went by the name of god? And what is the mysterious problem he now seeks help in solving?

The answers await in Weep, but so do more mysteries—including the blue-skinned goddess who appears in Lazlo’s dreams. How did he dream her before he knew she existed? And if all the gods are dead, why does she seem so real?

Welcome to Weep

The Review:

This was another book that was on my TBR for a long time, along with the author, and it is a lovely book that was such a fun read.

The writing was magnificent, it felt as if every word as magical and poetry. The writing style with is lyrical prose just made the story just as strong as it already was.

The world building was outstanding, and it takes you on a journey through the world and through the dreams of Lazlo, who is an orphan and a librarian who is always fascinated by the history of the world especially trying to find the lost city of Weep, which is always have been told to be legend. It really does a good job at tying in the lore within the world.

Sarai, is the blue skinned girl who communicates with Lazlo through his dreams and they both form a connection with one another. She is trying to get out of the influence of who her mother was and a world who basically wants her dead. She is very wide eyed and outgoing. As a godspawn she is made of light and darkness and is always at a constant struggle with what to do and it makes her a fantastic character.

The Sarai and Lazlo connection is one of the highlights of the book for me. They form such a good relationship with one another and its a love story that you want to root for. While it does sort of come across as insta-love especially when they first meet each other through Lazlo’s dream, it really helps that both of their characters are well developed.

In the end, Strange the Dreamer was a great first book that introduces you to a great world. Laini Taylor’s lyrical prose made this book truly amazing, and I cannot wait to read Muse of Nightmares.

Summer Blogger Promo Tour: TBR Tag

Happy Sunday everyone.

This is another post for the Summer Blogger Promo Tour.

1. What is the Summer Blogger Promo Tour?
The Summer Blogger Promo Tour is a summer tour that we’ve put together at The Book Bratz that helps a bunch of bloggers both new and old link up with each other and collab on fun posts throughout the summer!

And for this one myself and Lili @ Utopia State of Mind

How do you keep track of your TBR pile?

Lili: I put all the books I want to read on my To Read shelf on Goodreads. I know there are books I haven’t looked at from when I first started my Goodreads accounts ages ago, so I only look at the recently added ones.

Me: I usually start with Goodreads and for some of my bought books I looks at my shelf and then my Goodreads to see which books I really want to read.

  1. Is your TBR mostly print or e-book?

Lili: Print. I don’t normally prefer to read on e-book unless the price is unbeatable OR it’s an e-arc. Those are really the two reasons I’d do this.

Me: It is Print books mostly, sometimes it is an e-book

  1. A Book That’s Been On Your TBR List The Longest

Lili: This older series by Mercedes Lackey – the thousand kingdoms I think? I loved so many of Lackey’s books as a child growing up that they have this special nostalgic place in my heart.

Me: Anything by Patrick Rothfuss and Mark Lawrence. I haven’t read anything by these two authors but I keep hearing great things about them.

  1. A Book You Recently Added To Your TBR

Lili: I think I added WE HUNT THE FLAME recently, but there have been so many fantastic 2019/2020 books announced that I have gone on a TBR rampage. Save me.

Me: Crazy Rich Asians. I know that is mostly because the movie is coming out but I do sort of also want to read the book.

  1. A Book In Your TBR Strictly Because of Its Beautiful Cover

Lili: I haven’t done this recently only because I have to really go the extra effort to add the book to my TBR. So it’s normally just arcs I want to keep a track of or maybe request.

Me: A more recent example is Four Dead Queens. I remember seeing the cover at BookCon.

  1. A Book On Your TBR That You Never Plan on Reading

Lili:  Psh, I would love to read all the books on my TBR! That’s what it’s there for!

Me: If it’s on my TBR, then I will read it. Hopefully eventually

  1. An Unpublished Book on Your TBR That You’re Excited For

Lili: Well I just finished SADIE and that was fabulous, but of course I’m excited for SHADOWGLASS and SPY WITH THE RED BALLOON!

Me: What If It’s Us by Adam Silvera and Becky Albertali because I want to see what both of those authors come up with. Also Muse of Nightmares because I just finished Strange the Dreamer and loved it.

  1. A Book On Your TBR That Basically Everyone’s Read But You

Lili: Gah, a lot. I haven’t read Jenny Han or Victoria Schwab yet. So these are ones I get a lot of grief about! Or the Illuminae series – that one too. To be fair, I do now own these, so I have more of a reason to read them now!

Me: Jenny Han as well. I know Too All the Boys I Loved is coming on Netflix and it reminded me that I never even touched those books.

  1. A Book On Your TBR That Everyone Recommends To You

Lili: DARKER SHADE OF MAGIC keeps getting recommended to me, by one person…but I will read it!

Me: Anything by Renee Adhieh. I even met her at BookCon and I felt so bad for not reading her books. I keep getting recommended her books, but I will read them eventually.

  1. A Book On Your TBR That You’re Dying To Read

Lili: Gosh all of them? I am most excited for KINGDOM OF THE BLAZING PHOENIX though. I Have that but I haven’t dug in yet…

Me: City of Saints and Thieves, I am still surprised that I haven’t read it yet

  1. How many books are on your Goodreads TBR shelf?

Lili: I will not be answering this question. It’s too cruel.

Me: Yeah, about that. It will ever be growing that I have completely lost count.

Strange the Dreamer. Now I am hyped for Muse of Nightmares. It was so good. I loved the writing, this was the first book of Laini Taylor and I want to read more.

Furyborn, I really enjoyed. I liked the style in which its a book told through two time periods and each being such a lustful worlds in them.

Top 5 Wednesday: Favorites You’d like to Revist

Happy Wednesday everyone, and here is another Top 5 Wednesday and the topic is:

August 1: Favorites You’d Like to Revisit
— What favorite books would you like to re-read? These don’t just need to be books, they can also be TV, movies, video games, etc.

I love this topic because, there is always stuff I would love to revisit and not just books either.

Top 5 Wednesday is a group in Goodreads and was formerly created by Lainey at gingerreadslainey and is now done by Sam from Thoughts on Tomes. It is open to everyone.

The Uglies Trilogy by Scott Westerfeld

Image result for the uglies trilogy

I remember reading this series back when I was in high school and into college and really enjoying it. Then when I was at BookCon , I found out we has revisiting that world with Impostors. I was lucky enough to get an ARC of that book, but since I barely remember the Uglies trilogy, I should start by re-reading it.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Angel

Image result for buffy the vampire slayer

Buffy, is one of my favorite shows of all time, and withe news of a reboot, it got me thinking that I should rewatch the series. While I do have reservations about the reboot, but I did hear that it maybe a continuation rather than a full fledged reboot. I also credit this series for getting me more into the supernatural genre. I also can’t watch Buffy and also forgot about Angel, which I believe is a spin off that is almost better than the original show.

Red Dead Redemption

Image result for red dead redemption

With the sequel coming out in October, what better way to get me excited for the sequel, is to replay the original. I honestly believe that this game nailed the definitive western experience and it makes you feel like a bad ass.

The Illuminae Files by Jay Kristoff/Amie Kaufman

Image result for the illuminae files

My girlfriend bought the first book back in March. She still hasn’t read it, but no pressure for her. I really loved Obsidio, and it really gave me the epic finale I was looking for. This is one of my favorite series and I would love to do a buddy read with her.

Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo

Image result for six of crows duology

Another one of my favorite series. With King of Scars coming out this year, with also a Nina POV (so excited). I want to re-read this series again. While I wasn’t a huge fan of Shadow and Bone, this series, got me into the Grishaverse in the best way possible, with fantastic characters. I also heard rumors of a Six of Crows 3. Cross my fingers to hope that it is true.

Those are some of the favorites I would like to revisit. What are some of your favorites you would like to revisit? Let me know in the comments below.
