Summer Blogger Promo Tour: TBR Tag

Happy Sunday everyone.

This is another post for the Summer Blogger Promo Tour.

1. What is the Summer Blogger Promo Tour?
The Summer Blogger Promo Tour is a summer tour that we’ve put together at The Book Bratz that helps a bunch of bloggers both new and old link up with each other and collab on fun posts throughout the summer!

And for this one myself and Lili @ Utopia State of Mind

How do you keep track of your TBR pile?

Lili: I put all the books I want to read on my To Read shelf on Goodreads. I know there are books I haven’t looked at from when I first started my Goodreads accounts ages ago, so I only look at the recently added ones.

Me: I usually start with Goodreads and for some of my bought books I looks at my shelf and then my Goodreads to see which books I really want to read.

  1. Is your TBR mostly print or e-book?

Lili: Print. I don’t normally prefer to read on e-book unless the price is unbeatable OR it’s an e-arc. Those are really the two reasons I’d do this.

Me: It is Print books mostly, sometimes it is an e-book

  1. A Book That’s Been On Your TBR List The Longest

Lili: This older series by Mercedes Lackey – the thousand kingdoms I think? I loved so many of Lackey’s books as a child growing up that they have this special nostalgic place in my heart.

Me: Anything by Patrick Rothfuss and Mark Lawrence. I haven’t read anything by these two authors but I keep hearing great things about them.

  1. A Book You Recently Added To Your TBR

Lili: I think I added WE HUNT THE FLAME recently, but there have been so many fantastic 2019/2020 books announced that I have gone on a TBR rampage. Save me.

Me: Crazy Rich Asians. I know that is mostly because the movie is coming out but I do sort of also want to read the book.

  1. A Book In Your TBR Strictly Because of Its Beautiful Cover

Lili: I haven’t done this recently only because I have to really go the extra effort to add the book to my TBR. So it’s normally just arcs I want to keep a track of or maybe request.

Me: A more recent example is Four Dead Queens. I remember seeing the cover at BookCon.

  1. A Book On Your TBR That You Never Plan on Reading

Lili:  Psh, I would love to read all the books on my TBR! That’s what it’s there for!

Me: If it’s on my TBR, then I will read it. Hopefully eventually

  1. An Unpublished Book on Your TBR That You’re Excited For

Lili: Well I just finished SADIE and that was fabulous, but of course I’m excited for SHADOWGLASS and SPY WITH THE RED BALLOON!

Me: What If It’s Us by Adam Silvera and Becky Albertali because I want to see what both of those authors come up with. Also Muse of Nightmares because I just finished Strange the Dreamer and loved it.

  1. A Book On Your TBR That Basically Everyone’s Read But You

Lili: Gah, a lot. I haven’t read Jenny Han or Victoria Schwab yet. So these are ones I get a lot of grief about! Or the Illuminae series – that one too. To be fair, I do now own these, so I have more of a reason to read them now!

Me: Jenny Han as well. I know Too All the Boys I Loved is coming on Netflix and it reminded me that I never even touched those books.

  1. A Book On Your TBR That Everyone Recommends To You

Lili: DARKER SHADE OF MAGIC keeps getting recommended to me, by one person…but I will read it!

Me: Anything by Renee Adhieh. I even met her at BookCon and I felt so bad for not reading her books. I keep getting recommended her books, but I will read them eventually.

  1. A Book On Your TBR That You’re Dying To Read

Lili: Gosh all of them? I am most excited for KINGDOM OF THE BLAZING PHOENIX though. I Have that but I haven’t dug in yet…

Me: City of Saints and Thieves, I am still surprised that I haven’t read it yet

  1. How many books are on your Goodreads TBR shelf?

Lili: I will not be answering this question. It’s too cruel.

Me: Yeah, about that. It will ever be growing that I have completely lost count.

Summer Blogger Promo Tour: Interview with Lili

Happy Sunday,

This is another post for the Summer Blogger Promo Tour.

1. What is the Summer Blogger Promo Tour?
The Summer Blogger Promo Tour is a summer tour that we’ve put together at The Book Bratz that helps a bunch of bloggers both new and old link up with each other and collab on fun posts throughout the summer!

This week I am interviewing my partner Lili@UtopiaStateofMind

1.How long have you been blogging?

I have been blogging over two years, although it doesn’t even feel like that sometimes. Then again it feels much longer some days.

  1. What is a book or series that you like but everyone seems to hate?

This is such a difficult question! I don’t know if there’s a series like this. Maybe this means I just have very general tastes? I will say that the opposite occurs often. For example, while I enjoyed Harry Potter, I just never loved it as much as a lot of my friends.

  1. What is your go-to genre to read?

Science fiction and fantasy! If I had to pick one though? Fantasy. But I’d never just pick one, I’d more easily combine them into the genre of speculative fiction.

  1. Who are your auto-buy authors?

Traci Chee is one of my favorite authors, Heidi Heilig, Katherine Locke. I think these may be my top three where I also know I have just jumped blindly to their next books knowing I’d love it.

  1. Have you meet any authors? If so who were your favorites?

I’ve actually met quite a few in the last year. Since being back in NYC I’ve been able to go to tons of book events, not to mention I was lucky to go to a few conventions recently. Katherine Locke is one of my favorite! I first met her on Twitter when I read, and loved, Girl with the Red Balloon, and I feel like we’ve bumped into each other so much!

  1. If you could be a character in a book series, what series would it be?

This is extremely difficult. Recently in books I’ve been doing a, “I’d ___ with” series. So I’d fight a dragon with this character, or I’d pine after this one, and one of the ones I do is, “Character of My Heart”. So I’ve recently started thinking more and more about who I’d be. If I had to pick one, I’d pick Lirael from Lirael, or Daine from Wild Magic.

  1. What are some of your favorite posts?

I really like writing discussion posts, even though those are the hardest for me to write! Recently I’ve just been a combination of burnt out, but also extremely overworked over the last year particularly. So I just haven’t been able to be as creative, but I already have some really great ideas lined up for later this year.

  1. What’s your favorite part about blogging?

I think reading is my favorite. It’s hard for me to write reviews, mostly because I never just want to get together and sit down. I have to take notes while I read, so that’s definitely helpful, but I just don’t like the actual process I guess? But reading is definitely my favorite, I love getting sucked into new worlds.

  1. What book made you want to blog?

Gosh, I think the first book I reviewed was Eat, Pray, Love. But that isn’t the book that made me want to blog. I think it was a combination of factors that kind of just pushed me into it. I don’t even remember why I started with that book. I was mainly trying to just motivate myself to do non-thesis reading – and it worked! So the TLDR is there is no one book I guess?

  1. What’s your favorite social media platform?

I love instagram. It’s hard because I feel like my content isn’t necessarily what people love. I adore outdoor single book photos with unique angles, but that is kind of rare in the Bookstagram world. That being said, if that sounds like your jam -> https://www.instagram.com/utopia.state.of.mind/

  1. What made you want to start a blog?

So I already talked a bit how I wanted to make sure I was reading non-thesis books, but I think I also missed talking about books with friends. I was doing a very serious Masters, and I missed chatting about current reads – like I can do now. I missed that interaction and sharing my love of a book with the world, but also friends.

  1. What tips do you have for new bloggers?

Figure out why you want to blog and try not to lose sight of it. We can get overwhelmed or caught up in arcs or reviews, but find out why you want to blog and hold onto that. Because that motivation is going to be what keeps you blogging.

Mid-Year Freak Out Book Tag

I cannot believe it is already at the mid way point of the year, and I read so many great books. I wasn’t tagged by anyone but I decided to do this anyway.

Best Book you’ve read so far:

Image result for The cruel prince

This is the first book I have read by Holly Black, and I was so glad to meet her earlier this year when she came to Boston. It had morally grey characters and a lot of political intrigue. I cannot wait to read The Wicked King.

Image result for batman nightwalker

My favorite author wrote one of my favorite superheros and it was amazing. It was a sort of origin story of Batman, when he was just Bruce Wayne, a young billionaire with dead parents.

Best Sequel You’ve Read this year

Image result for obsidio

Of course. The ending of the Illuminae series gave me all the feels. I am so glad that I read this series.

Image result for thunderhead

THAT CLIFFHANGER! This took everything that was Scythe and turned it up to 11. Great characters and I need to know what happens next.

New release you haven’t read yet, but want to.

Image result for lifelike jay kristoffImage result for furyborn claire legrand

I loved the Illuminae series and I am excited to read his new series. I also heard good things about Furyborn, and the premise sounds good.

Most anticipated release for the second half of the year

Image result for vengeful book

I loved Vicious, and I was surprised that a sequel was happening.

Image result for what if it's us

Two authors that I really like is writing a book. I am sold. Also since its Adam Silvera and Becky Albertalli I am basically going to suffer and be happy about it.

Biggest disappointment

Image result for the library of fates

Let me just say that the ending really dragged this book down. While it did have a good setting, I just couldn’t connect with the characters and the plot.

Biggest surprise

Image result for eliza and her monstersImage result for the poet x

These books are sort of outside of what I usually read. Eliza and her Monsters is a contemporary YA novel, which dealt a lot with fandom. The Poet X is a book told through verse, which is something I really don’t grab for.

Favorite new author. (Debut or new to you)

Image result for tomi adeyemi

I loved this book. A fantasy novel set within West Africa. I cannot wait to see how the series goes on.

Book that made you cry.

Image result for long way down

Oh Jason Reynolds. How it did it take this long to finally read you books. I also made the mistake of reading this after I finished Dear Martin. Yeah, I was almost in a whirlwind of emotion.

Book that made you happy.

Image result for when dimple met rishi

A nice cute YA romcom, that truly made me happy and rooting for the couple. \

Favorite book to film adaptation you saw this year.

Image result for love, simon

Last year I read Simon vs. and then I finally saw the movie this year. While it did make some changes to the adaptation I still loved the movie. Hopefully with this and The Hate U Give it will lead to better YA adaptations.

Favorite review you’ve written this year. (Booktube version: Favourite video you have done so far in this year)

Top 5 Other SFF Media

I loved writing the list, and seeing other lists of other faves that people like with the SFF medium.

That is my Mid Year freak out Book tag for 2018. I really hope the rest of year will also lead to a great reading year.

If you are reading this, consider yourself tagged.

Mid Year Freak Out Book Tag

Wow, it is the middle of 2017, and it is very exciting. I see a lot of the other bloggers/Booktubers doing this so I decided to do it. I wasn’t tagged by anyone.

Best Book you read so far?

A book about a world in which death has been conquered, and Scythe’s are responsible for keeping the population in control. Here is my review.

The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas

A book inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement, in which Starr sees a friend killed by the police and the aftermath of the shooting. Here is my review.

Best Sequel You’ve Read

This is a two for one deal because both of these sequels are amazing and it proves why she is one of my new favorite authors. Both books ups the stakes of the previous books, and Our Dark Duet was an emotional roller coaster.

New Releases You Haven’t Read Yet, But Want to

I have heard good things about both of these books, and I really want to read them very soon.

Most anticipated release for the second half of the year

If you are familiar with my blog, you should know that both Marie Lu and Marissa Meyer, are two of my auto-buy authors. Both of them are making new series so of course I am excited to read both of these books.

Biggest Disappointment

While I did enjoy the book, it just wasn’t at the potential that I thought it was. I also felt that the book was a little to short and I kinda wanted more from the story.

Biggest Surprise

This was a sort of random pick up, and I enjoyed it very much. It had me at Sailor Moon meets Pacific Rim and it was great. Here is my review.

Favorite new author

Earlier this year, I read More Happy Than Not and was completely blown away by it, and then I read History is All You Left Me which was also equally good. Now he is one my favorite YA contemporary authors.

Book that made you cry

Enough said.

Book that made you happy

This was a cute little high school story about a boy coming out and trying to find love. Really good read and I cannot wait for the movie to come out.

That is my Mid-Year Freak out Tag. If you are reading this consider yourself tagged. Also what are your favorite books you have read so far? Let me know in the comments below.

3 Things About me:

-I live in Boston, I have lived here my whole life, while I do enjoy living I sometimes can’t stand the brutal winters. Today it was almost 4 degrees when I woke up.

-I love Broadway Musicals. Growing up dancing my class would always dance to at least one song from a musical. My favorites include Wicked, Chicago, Spring Awakening, and Hamilton. With special mentions of The Sound of Music and Mary Poppins.

-I also love comics. My favorite heroes include Batman, Spider-Man and X-Men. I still get excited for new comic book movies every year.

Questions from Maddie A:

What is the one book you are looking forward to in 2017?:

I loved This Savage Song, and I was so excited that a sequel was being written, and I want to see the story continue.

What is a book you’d give a love one for the holidays.

I am cheating a bit because I am giving this book to my goddaughter for Christmas, and she loves contemporary romances.

Any blog plans in 2017?

-I want to do more discussion posts, it would be a change of pace from my usual reviews and weekly memes.

Favorite Gif of 2017

For all of my 5/5 book reviews

Weird book hoarder: How many books did you buy that you still have to read?

Just a few for now, I am actually getting better at buying books and reading them.

Questions from Lindsey:

What is your favorite kind of post to write?

-Usually my 5/5 book reviews, because it is usually me gushing on how much I loved the book and telling people to read it now. Also some discussion posts, I plan on doing more next year.

What’s the strangest/unique place you read a book?

-One time I read an entire book on a bus ride from Boston to DC.

What’s a bookish/blogging goal you have for next year?

-Like I said earlier, I want to do more discussion posts about books, and the bookish community.

Which setting would you choose to live in: dystopian or fantasy? And why?

-I prefer fantasy, mainly because I don’t know if I could survive a dystopian setting and in a fantasy setting I have magic to help me.

. You’re in the Hunger Games (district style where two can live), who would you pick as your partner? It can be a character from any book/series.

She can do most of the killing, especially since she is a trained assassin.

Other than blogging and reading, what other hobbies do you have?

Gilmore Girls Book Tag

With the upcoming revival coming back and also the fact that the UP channel is playing an every Gilmore Girls ever marathon, why not do a tag of one of my favorite shows Gilmore Girls. And yes I am a Gilmore Guy. I wasn’t tagged by anyone, but I thought it would be fun to do. This tag was created by punksandpaperbooks.

Lorelai-A character with a witty or sarcastic sense of humor

Tyrion Lanniseter from A Song of Ice and Fire. As a former hand to King Joffrey, we always knew what to say in the toughest of times, and he always had a good wit about him.

Rory – Your favorite classic

Matilda by Roald Dahl. It was one of the first chapter books I read, and it is of course my favorite classic because I can relate a lot to the character of Matilda and her love for reading.

Luke – A book you secretly love, but are afraid to admit.

I pick Gossip Girl, while most would think of the show, and I know it would be a cliche for me to say this but, the book is better. I was in high school/college when the book came out, and it would be weird as a guy to say that I openly love Gossip Girl, but I do.

Lane – A musical character

I pick August from This Savage Song. He carries around his guitar not just because he loves music but it is also his weapon and how he uses his powers.

Dean- Your first book love (character or book you first loved!)

Hermione Granger, what can I say. I like my ladies smart and bookish.

Sooki – A book you’ve devoured

Champion by Marie Lu, it took an entire bus ride from Boston to Washington DC to read the book from start to finished and I loved it.

Jess- A book you love, that gets the most hate.

Despite what people may think of the story, I actually like the series a lot. I love the characters and how they interacted with each other. The movies, were pretty bad and didn’t follow the book.

Miss Patty – A book that was ruined by the hype

I was told that this was a Harry Potter meets Buffy, and when I finished the book I just felt a very “meh” feeling towards it. But this was a book I felt was way over hyped. I am currently reading Lady Midnight and I like what I am reading so far.

Emily Gilmore – expensive book

While the other Song of Ice and Fire books I bought were paperback, this is the only hard cover and boy it was very expensive compared to the other books.

Paris – An uptight character

Radu, from And I Darken, he was very whiny in the book and very uptight, hopefully like Paris he loosens up in future books.

That is my Gilmore Girls Book Tag. Can’t wait for Gilmore Girls to come out on Friday, in which I will be binge watching.

If you are reading this consider yourself tagged.

The Secret Life of a Book Blogger Tag

Hello everyone,

This is the Secret Life of a Book Blogger I was tagged by Closet Readers, sorry it took me long.

How Long have you been blogging?

I have been blogging since January of this year. It took me a while to really get it out there. After a few months I participated in weekly memes like Top 5 Wednesday, WWWednesday and Hype or Like Friday, and I got more followers, and started commenting a lot on other blogs.

At what point do you think you will stop?

I really don’t know, let me just say when I’m dead.

What is the best part?

Just the community feel of it. I can have conversions with other fans of book series that I love. I made some great friends from all over because of our love for books.

What is the worst part?

Trying to keep up a blogging, especially as a student who is also working. Also trying to keep with a very long TBR list.

How long does it take to find/create pictures you use?

I usually just use google, but sometimes for Tags and memes I want to try to find the perfect pictures.

Who is you book crush?

What can I say? I like smart, bookish girls.

What author would you like to have on your blog?

JK Rowling, Marissa Meyer, Marie Lu, George RR Martin, VE Schwab. Any one of those authors I would just love to pick their brain on how they come up with these amazing books.

What do you wear while you blog?

Regular clothes, depends what time of day it is.

How long does it take to prepare a post?

It depends. With a book review, it takes me a about a day to prepare my notes for the review. Memes and tags takes me a bit longer to think up answers to questions

How do you feel about book blogging community/culture?

Mainly the feeling of inclusion. I love all my followers, on wordpress, Twitter any social media. I like we could have conversations about our favorite books, and getting great recommendations for other books as well.

What do you think one should do to have a successful blog?

Just do you.Learn from your mistakes, keep at it no matter what and keep reviewing great books. Also diversify yourself, have discussion posts, or other posts non book related.
