Pencils- Favorite Children’s Book

Growing up reading, these books were my favorite. Especially Matilda, BFG and James and the Giant Peach. These books were a part of my childhood.

Pens-A Basic Staple for any reader

Of course, Harry Potter is an obvious choice for any reader. It was one of the first big series I think most of us have read and never stopped. I still re-read to this day.

Notebooks-Books you own multiple copies of.

Again, Harry Potter. My paperbacks for Sorcerers Stone and Chamber of Secrets were ripped, so I bought new copies. I hope that counts.

Markers-Books with beautiful covers

Don’t those covers look amazing.

Glue: Two Characters that work together even if they aren’t together.

Day and June worked well together all throughout the series, even when during Prodigy and Champion they spent some time apart.

Scissors: What book would you like to destroy?

I can’t!!!!!! Yes I read the first book to see what the hype was a about, finished it and kept wondering why. It was poorly written, the characters are awful and lines are cringe-worthy.

Art kit: What completed series you own?

The Hunger Games Trilogy by Suzanne Collins

The Harry Potter series by JK Rowling

The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer

The Legend Trilogy by Marie Lu

The Maze Runner Trilogy by James Dashner

The Divergent Trilogy by Veronica Roth

The Darkest Minds Trilogy by Alexandra Bracken

The Lord of the Rings Trilogy by JR Tolkien

Six of Crows Duolgy by Leigh Bardugo

Top 5 Wednesday-Unlikable Characters

Happy Wednesday everyone,

Sorry I haven’t been doing these in a while, its just that some of the topics I couldn’t think of anything to write about those.

This is one I was very excited to see and boy do I have some unpopular opinions or popular depending on who you ask. This is Top 5 unlikable characters, that are not villains. This is just my opinion, if you love these characters that’s fine, to me they were unlikable.

Top 5 Wednesday is a group in Goodreads and was formerly created by Lainey at gingerreadslainey and is now done by Sam from Thoughts on Tomes. It is open to everyone.

Magnus from Falling Kingdoms

I know a lot of people ship him and Cleo, but I can’t ship it. I feel he was intended to be a “dark prince” sort of like Zuko from The Last Airbender. But I always felt he was too whiny and he also did something that I felt was unforgivable, if you read the book you know what I am talking about.

Clary Fray from The Mortal Instruments series

I used movie Clary as an example because, while show Clary comes off as unlikable she is a better actress than movie Clary. The problem I have is Clary is that she is boring and bland. I feel that the supporting characters are so much better. I also don’t care for her romances.

Serena van der Woodson from Gossip Girl series

Before you kill me, I am talking specifically about book Serena. Book Serena was very arrogant and almost a Mary-Sue. She got into ivy-league schools with mediocre grades, a starring role in movies and boys worshiping the ground she walks on. I do credit the series for at least improving Serena’s character and grounding her a bit. For the record I like show Serena.

Gale Hawthrone from the Hunger Games

Yes, come at me Gale girls! He was basically the hometown guy, he is bland and boring. While he did get better a little by Mockingjay, but unlike Peeta, he doesn’t know what it was like to be in the Hunger Games.

Christian Grey from Fifty Shades of Grey

Yeah, you know this was coming. I seriously don’t know why the girls go for him. He is basically a controlling, abusive stalker and needs a therapist and not a girlfriend. I know he is suppose to be dark and mysterious, and could have worked as a Don Draper type, but he wasn’t written that way.

There’s my list. Who are some unlikable characters from books you have read. Let me know in the comments below.

Hype or Like: Tragically Bad or Superbly Awesome Books

Happy Friday everyone,

For this weeks Hype or Like Friday I will be discussing Tragically Bad and Superbly Awesome Books

Hype or Like Friday is a meme created by Jillian, Larkin, and Britt to discuss about hyped books and see if they’re hyped up or not. There would be book of the month that you can read, and the post your review for it on the end of the month, then rate it whether it’s a hype it or like it.

For my pick for a tragically bad book it is Fifty Shades of Grey

After read Jillian’s post on awful dialogue last week, it caused me to revisit how awful the book really is. Most would say its a book series that set the women movement back 100 years, with a male lead who is a controlling abusive  stalker who needs psychological help and not a girlfriend. That is true, but I want to tell why it is bad from a story perspective. The story is just Twilight fan-fiction, that got a publishing deal. Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey are just stand ins for Bella and Edward with a much blander love story. Which got me thinking, if you take out all of the BDSM scenes in the book, than it is just a dumb love story, with a man who is a controlling abusive stalker.

Also the dialogue is just awful especially Anastasia inner monologue or her “inner goddess”. I think it just annoys me that a book with that much awful dialogue got a publishing deal and became a best seller.

My pick for my superbly awesome book it is The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer

The reason why the book series is awesome is because it is very different from the normal YA genre. It was developed characters, a great plot and story, and manages to retell fairy tales in a different way while maintaining the essence of the original tales. While Cinder starts off a bit slow, the story really picks up in Scarlet and Cress. I also consider Winter to be a very good final book of the series that both develops the characters and gives us a satisfying conclusion.

What are your favorite tragically bad and/or superbly awesome books. Let me know in the comments below.

Hype or Like Friday #1

Hype or Like Friday is a meme created by Jillian, Larkin, and Britt to discuss about hyped books and see if they’re hyped up or not. There would be book of the month that you can read, and the post your review for it on the end of the month, then rate it whether it’s a hype it or like it.

For this week it is Top 10 hyped up books. For this it doesn’t necessarily mean bad, I just felt they were over hyped. If you like any of these books or series that’s fine.

Top 10 Hyped Up books: not in any order

The Darkest Minds Trilogy

This is a book series that had a great premise but the story and execution was poorly done. I mean, kids with powers should be a great premise alone, but the problem was the powers were not clearly defined.

The Mortal Instruments Series

Talk about an over hyped series. Everyone kept saying its Harry Potter meets Buffy, and of course not a bad combination but I really hated the love story, and I actually like the supporting characters better than the two leads. I only read the first two, so tell me that it gets better.

The Winners Curse

If you read my T5W DNF, this was on the list. I felt the characters were boring and flat and the plot was messy, and when the story finally picked up I didn’t feel anything for the characters.

John Green books

Ok, the only book I actually liked was the Fault in our Stars. But than when I read his other books I felt the tropes were very repetitive. It was Paper Towns that kinda had me lose interest in his books.

Nicholas Sparks books

A Walk to Remember was a book I really likes, I also enjoyed the Notebook. But like with John Green books the book tropes become so repetitive that every book is the same story.

Shadow and Bone trilogy

I read the first book, but it was such a chore to get through and I could see the plot twist coming a mile away. I though the book was okay but no where near the level of hype.

Alice in Zombieland

The title alone should have made this awesome. But what ruined it was the dumb insta-love and the poorly written plot.

Fifty Shades of Grey

In the end the book is just Twilight fan fiction, that is really poorly written and with poorly developed characters.

Thirteen Reasons Why

Okay you probably think I am a heartless bastard but hear me out. I thought the book was good, but I think because when I read Shooter by Walter Dean Myers, that book didn’t hold back. I also felt that Hannah was a thinly developed character.

Throne of Glass

I actually really like this series so far, only in the middle of Heir of Fire. I think the character of Celaena is not the bad ass female character that everyone says she is. I also sometimes feel the romance is taking too much time from the action that everyone wants to see.

Those are my choices for the Top 10 over hyped books. Hope you enjoyed it.
