Oscar Best Picture Nominee: Spotlight

Next in my countdown to the Academy Awards I am going to review Spotlight which starts Rachel Mcadams, Mark Ruffalo, Micheal Keaton, Stanley Tucci, Liev Schreiber, and John Slattery. It details the reporting of the Boston Church sex scandal that was going on from 2001-02.

The main strength of this movie is that it focuses primarily on their investigation, and uncovering a story how several priests sexually molested children and how the Archdiocese covered it up. When interviewing several survivors, they were able to learn about the psychological affects it took on them.

The cast is also really great in the movie and both Rachel McAdams and Mark Ruffalo deserve their Oscar nominations. Also there is not really any “Oscar” scenes in the movie and that what makes the movie great is that they are acting as any journalist uncovering this scandal would react. The ensemble really shines in the movie and everyone plays their part extremely well.

As someone who was living in Boston at the time of this scandal I liked I was able to see the behind the scenes aspect of the story.

In terms of Oscar predictions, I think it could win Best Picture and also Screenplay. I have a lot more films to go through.

Grade: A
